MAP Mercator isn't just a place to look at maps; it's a place to experience them. The museum deliberately chooses a thematic approach rather than a chronological one. In four zones, visitors are first amazed and then engrossed. Masterpieces like the original Gerard Mercator globes and the Lafreri Atlas are juxtaposed with impressive multimedia installations.
At Nazka Mapps, we live and breathe maps. Our mission is always to bring data and geography to life, and that's exactly what MAP Mercator does. We are therefore particularly proud to have been able to contribute our expertise to this project.
The museum focuses not only on the history of the 16th-century 'Flemish Master' Mercator, but also on the role of maps in our daily lives. Visitors can, among other things, construct the 'map of their life' using a tablet, see what their own head looks like in various map projections, browse through the Largest Atlas of the World (literally!), and much more.
Maps make choices. They show what's important and sometimes leave out what we don't want to see. MAP Mercator doesn't shy away from discussion: from the famous (and sometimes contested) Mercator projection to modern online applications.
The museum demonstrates that cartography is a constantly evolving craft—from the hand-colored atlases of the past to the smart digital map applications we work on daily at Nazka Mapps.
Until 4 January, Sint-Niklaas is hosting a spectacular opening festival with late-night openings and extra activities. The mural 'Little Gerard' on the facade will guide you.
We are proud to have contributed to this technological and cultural feat. MAP Mercator is an absolute must-see for anyone who wants to discover how we see the world (and how the world sees us).
Will we see you there?
