MajiQ: an EXPLORE-implementation for Lake Tanganyika and Lake Kivu

With 18% of the world's available freshwater volume, the basin of Lakes Tanganyika and Kivu holds global significance and is vital for over 12 million people: it provides drinking water, jobs and food, and is a global biodiversity hotspot. The Lake Tanganyika Authority needs an environmental monitoring system to ensure water quality, ecosystem services and to support climate adaptation measures. Such a system should come with an online platform to facilitate information sharing among various regions and countries to work efficiently. This last part is where Nazka Mapps can play their role as mapping specialist. Within this project, an online demonstration platform was developed to explore water quality indices, analyse time series and download datasets by users with a minimum of remote sensing expertise. This prototype helped outline the road-map for implementing the eventual environmental monitoring with stakeholders. EXPLORE-MajiQ is another Nazka development that contributes to a better environment for current and future generations world-wide. It is in this mission that we find a great partnership with VITO, with whom we are working together on several projects.
